Go by Citizens is an industry first in the restaurant game. It’s a culinary marketplace of digital restaurants and a fresh alternative to third-party delivery platforms. A collab of some key players in the food-tech industry, this partnership is truly two innovative companies coming together to create a product that was – at the time of its inception – brand new to the market.

Creating Culinary Communities, aka C3, is the ghost kitchen and food hall-focused hospitality group from Sam Nazarian, CEO and founder. In early 2020, Sam approached Nabeel Alamgir, Lunchbox’s CEO, and co-founder, with the idea of multi-concept ghost kitchens.

Together, they would offer a digital ordering platform toolbox through Lunchbox to create a third-party delivery alternative: Go by Citizens. By November, Go by Citizens launched with both app and web ordering. Powered by Lunchbox, Go by Citizens houses C3's entire ghost kitchen network of over 200 virtual food halls, brick-and-mortar restaurants, airport dining, and co-working spaces.

"This is so much more than a delivery app," says Nabeel Alamgir, CEO & Co-Founder of Lunchbox. "This is something born out of a shared vision between both partners to pave the way for up-and-coming chefs and restaurateurs to make their brands global. It's an incubator for entrepreneurs and the future of the ghost kitchen model.”

Go by Citizens is the first truly digital food hall. It offers brands like Krispy Rice, Umami Burger, Sam's Crispy Chicken, Graduate Food Halls, and brick-and-mortar restaurants like EllaMia cafés, and the Citizens food hall at Manhattan West. It also houses completely new concepts from global chefs, including Dani Garcia, Dario Cecchini, and Katsuya Uechi.

Customers within a delivery radius of the C3 network of ghost kitchens are able to download the app for Android or iPhone and place an order from one (or multiple) of the available brands. The food is then delivered all at the same time through DoorDash’s third-party last-mile service, Ride United. To celebrate the launch, customers received a free Umami burger for their first in-app order. The app currently offers delivery in Los Angeles, Northern California, New York City, and Chicago, and will expand in cities across the country, including Miami, Austin, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, and Atlanta.

“Our partnership with Go by Citizens has really guided us to break through the mold of what guests can expect from their online ordering marketplace,” says Nabeel. “With the launch of our solution, we enabled any cloud kitchen to facilitate their own marketplace, further hitting our mission of empowering restaurants with their own first-party ordering and access to their customer data.”

The team was confronted with challenges unlike any other in the industry. The goal was to create an experience where customers could easily mix and match orders from C3’s 200+ virtual and brick-and-mortar brands – an experience that was completely new.

And that challenge was accepted. Lunchbox equipped all C3 concepts with first-party, app and web ordering capabilities. They also enabled any of C3’s cloud kitchens to facilitate their own marketplace, which empowers each of these brands with their own first-party ordering and access to their customer data. As a result, Go by Citizens experienced a 78% increase in check average compared to the average of Lunchbox’s other clients.

This became a pioneering moment for ghost kitchens. A brand new path was forged for driving direct-to-consumer relationships, brand building, and offering guests a hospitality-forward experience.
